How to Build a Healthy, Discerned Relationship With AI in Your Spiritual Practice
Overview
Artificial intelligence is changing the world faster than almost any technology before it.
People are using it to write books.
Research complex topics.
Translate ancient languages.
Learn new skills.
Build businesses.
Solve problems.
And increasingly, many are turning to AI with spiritual questions.
Some people find that exciting.
Others find it concerning.
I believe both responses are understandable.
Like every powerful tool humanity has ever created, AI carries incredible potential when used wisely. It can also become unhealthy when we begin depending on it for things it was never meant to replace.
This understanding became one of the reasons I introduced The Divine Algorithm in 2024. It reminds us that while knowledge can come from many places, wisdom must ultimately be lived. AI can help us explore ideas, compare perspectives, and deepen our understanding, but no technology can replace the work of self-awareness, discernment, and personal experience.
AI Is an Extraordinary Tool
Artificial intelligence can help you explore questions that once required weeks of research.
It can summarize complex books.
Compare different interpretations of ancient texts.
Explain neuroscience.
Explore philosophy.
Introduce you to ideas from cultures all over the world.
That’s remarkable.
We’re living in a time when information has become more accessible than ever before.
Rather than fearing that reality, I believe we should learn to use it wisely.
Knowledge has always been one of humanity’s greatest resources.
AI simply makes that resource easier to access.
But Every Tool Has Limits
A map can show you the path.
It cannot walk it for you.
A cookbook can teach a recipe.
It cannot taste the meal.
A fitness program can explain every exercise.
It cannot strengthen your muscles.
The same is true of AI.
It can explain forgiveness.
It cannot forgive.
It can describe gratitude.
It cannot feel grateful.
It can discuss love.
It cannot experience loving another human being.
The deepest parts of life still require participation.
Not observation.
The Divine Algorithm Begins With Experience
One of the central ideas behind the Divine Algorithm is that lasting transformation comes through lived experience.
Reading about compassion isn’t the same as practicing it.
Learning about peace isn’t the same as becoming peaceful.
Studying forgiveness isn’t the same as forgiving.
AI can introduce you to wisdom.
Only life can integrate it.
That’s why experience remains one of our greatest teachers.
Let AI Expand Your Perspective
One of my favorite ways to use AI is to ask better questions.
Instead of asking,
“Tell me what to believe.”
Ask,
“How have different traditions understood this idea?”
Or,
“What does neuroscience say about this experience?”
Or,
“What evidence supports this perspective, and what evidence challenges it?”
Those questions cultivate curiosity.
Curiosity strengthens discernment.
And discernment protects wisdom.
Never Outsource Your Inner Authority
One of the greatest spiritual risks isn’t using AI.
It’s surrendering your own judgment to it.
If every important decision begins with,
“What does AI think?”
2-minute quiz
Discover the pattern that programmed you
When you look back, what shaped who you are most?
Or take the full quizInstead of,
“What do I honestly know through reflection, experience, and careful discernment?”
Something important has shifted.
No technology should become your conscience.
No algorithm should replace your responsibility to think deeply, observe honestly, and live intentionally.
Healthy guidance points you back toward greater awareness.
It doesn’t ask you to stop using it.
Leave Space for Silence
One thing AI cannot replace is silence.
Some of the most important moments in my life didn’t come while searching for another answer.
They came while walking.
Praying.
Watching the sunrise.
Sitting quietly without needing to solve anything.
Our culture has become incredibly skilled at filling every empty moment.
I’ve learned that wisdom often appears in the spaces we don’t rush to fill.
Technology should support those moments.
Not eliminate them.
Test Every Idea Against Real Life
A beautiful idea isn’t automatically a true one.
One of the healthiest habits you can develop is asking:
Does this help me become more patient?
More compassionate?
More honest?
More peaceful?
Does it improve my relationships?
Does it make me more present?
Does it encourage humility?
Ideas become meaningful when they produce meaningful fruit.
That’s true whether they come from a book, a teacher, an AI system, or your own reflections.
Stay Curious. Stay Humble.
One lesson AI reinforces every day is how much there is still to learn.
Every answer opens another question.
Every discovery reveals another mystery.
I think that’s healthy.
Humility protects us from believing we’ve arrived.
Curiosity keeps us growing.
The strongest spiritual life isn’t built on pretending to know everything.
It’s built on remaining teachable.
Technology Should Lead You Back to Life
I’ve found that the healthiest use of AI is surprisingly simple.
Learn.
Reflect.
Then go live.
Close the screen.
Call your parents.
Spend time with your children.
Take a walk.
Help a neighbor.
Read a book slowly.
Watch the sunset.
Pray.
Create something beautiful.
Love someone well.
Technology is at its best when it sends you back into life with greater wisdom instead of pulling you away from it.
Final Thoughts
I don’t believe artificial intelligence is here to replace humanity.
I believe it’s here to challenge humanity to become even more intentional.
The Divine Algorithm isn’t about rejecting technology.
It’s about using every tool available without forgetting where lasting wisdom is actually formed.
Not in a server.
Not in an algorithm.
Not in a machine.
But in the daily choices that shape your character.
Use AI to ask better questions.
To explore new ideas.
To broaden your understanding.
But never stop returning to the quiet place where knowledge becomes wisdom…
Where information becomes transformation…
And where the deepest guidance still emerges through awareness, experience, humility, and the courage to live what you’ve learned.
Because the future won’t belong to those who simply have access to the most powerful technology.
It will belong to those who know how to use it without ever losing themselves.
If these ideas resonate with you, I explore them more deeply in The Other 95%, The Heart Compass, and the Divine Algorithm Framework. My hope is to help people embrace powerful technologies with wisdom—using them to expand learning while remaining deeply rooted in discernment, compassion, integrity, and the quiet guidance that no machine can ever replace.
