Do Affirmations Actually Work?

Overview

Walk into almost any bookstore or spend a few minutes on social media, and you’ll eventually hear someone say, “Just repeat positive affirmations and your life will change.”

But do affirmations actually work?

The answer is yes… and no.

Like most things involving the human mind, the truth is more nuanced than either extreme.

An affirmation isn’t magic.

It’s a tool.

Whether that tool helps you depends largely on how, when, and why you’re using it.

What Is an Affirmation?

An affirmation is simply a statement you intentionally repeat to reinforce a particular belief or mindset.

Examples include:

“I am worthy.”

“I am healthy.”

“I am confident.”

“I am at peace.”

The idea is that repeated thoughts influence the subconscious mind, which in turn influences behavior, decisions, emotions, and ultimately the direction of your life.

Modern neuroscience supports the idea that repetition can strengthen neural pathways. Our brains are constantly adapting through a process known as neuroplasticity. Thoughts and behaviors that are repeated tend to become more familiar and, over time, more automatic.

That doesn’t mean every affirmation instantly becomes reality.

It means repetition matters.

Why Affirmations Sometimes Don’t Work

Here’s where many people become frustrated.

They stand in front of a mirror saying, “I’m wealthy,” while every part of them internally believes they’re broke.

Or they repeat, “I love myself,” while carrying years of unresolved shame.

The conscious mind may be speaking one message.

The subconscious may be running another.

When those two are in conflict, the deeper program usually wins.

That’s why affirmations alone often feel ineffective.

They’re trying to overwrite a program without first understanding the code that’s already running.

The Real Power Is in the Subconscious

One of the central ideas I explore in The Other 95% is that much of human behavior is driven by subconscious programming.

From childhood, we absorb beliefs about ourselves, other people, money, relationships, success, God, failure, and what’s possible.

Many of those beliefs were never consciously chosen.

They were inherited through repetition, emotional experiences, and the environments we grew up in.

If your subconscious believes you’re unworthy, simply saying “I am worthy” once a day may not be enough to change decades of conditioning.

That doesn’t mean the affirmation failed.

It means the deeper program also needs attention.

The Divine Algorithm Perspective

Within the Divine Algorithm—a framework I introduced in 2024—affirmations are most effective when they become expressions of alignment rather than attempts to convince yourself of something you don’t believe.

Instead of using affirmations to force reality, use them to reinforce the direction you’re intentionally choosing.

An affirmation becomes far more powerful when it is supported by awareness, action, and experience.

Every decision you make either strengthens an old pattern or helps build a new one.

Your daily choices are affirmations too.

Words Alone Don’t Reprogram Your Life

Imagine someone says,

“I am healthy.”

Then they never sleep well.

They live under constant stress.

They avoid movement.

They ignore their body’s needs.

The affirmation isn’t the problem.

The lifestyle doesn’t support it.

The same applies to confidence.

You don’t become confident simply by repeating the word.

Confidence grows from keeping promises to yourself.

Taking small courageous actions.

Learning from failure.

Building evidence that supports your new identity.

Eventually your subconscious begins accepting the new belief because you’ve lived it repeatedly.

Jesus Understood Something Similar

One of the reasons I find the teachings of Jesus so fascinating is that He consistently emphasized the condition of the heart over outward appearances.

He wasn’t simply concerned with what people said.

He was concerned with what they genuinely believed and lived.

Real transformation begins internally.

When the heart changes, behavior follows.

When behavior changes consistently, life changes with it.

A Better Way to Use Affirmations

Instead of repeating words you don’t believe, begin with statements that invite honesty and growth.

Instead of saying,

“I have no fear,”

try,

“I am learning to move forward even when fear is present.”

Instead of,

“I have perfect peace,”

try,

“I choose peace one decision at a time.”

These kinds of affirmations often feel more authentic because they acknowledge where you are while pointing toward where you’re going.

As your experiences change, your beliefs begin changing as well.

So… Do Affirmations Work?

Yes.

But not because they magically change the universe.

They work because repeated thoughts, combined with intentional action, can gradually reshape how you think, perceive, and respond.

Affirmations are not shortcuts.

They are reminders.

They help direct your attention toward the person you’re becoming.

But lasting transformation happens when your thoughts, your choices, your habits, and your relationship with God begin moving in the same direction.

That’s where real change occurs.

Not through empty repetition.

But through conscious awareness, aligned action, and a willingness to rewrite the patterns that no longer serve you.

That’s the difference between simply repeating positive words…
