If God Could Speak, Would He Ask for More Than One Hour?

Overview

What if, just for a moment, we looked at our relationship with God from the other direction?

We spend a great deal of time asking what God wants from us.

But how often do we ask what it must feel like to be God?

Imagine loving someone completely.

Knowing them before they took their first breath.

Watching every joy they celebrate and every tear they cry.

Never abandoning them, even when they forget you.

Always remaining available.

Always waiting.

Not because you need something from them, but because you love them.

Now imagine that, for many people, the only time they speak to you is when they need something.

A better job.

Healing.

Protection.

Financial help.

A miracle.

Or perhaps they set aside one hour each week to acknowledge your existence before returning to lives so full of distraction that they rarely think of you again.

Whether or not you believe God experiences emotion exactly as we do, that picture is worth sitting with.

Not because it tells us something about God’s weakness.

But because it may reveal something about our priorities.

Relationships Cannot Thrive on Occasional Conversation

Think about the people you love most.

What would happen if you only spoke to your spouse, your child, your best friend, or your parents for one hour each week?

And every conversation revolved around what you wanted from them.

Would that relationship grow deeper?

Would they feel truly known?

Would they feel valued?

Probably not.

Relationships grow through presence.

Through listening.

Through gratitude.

Through sharing ordinary moments, not just emergencies.

Why should our relationship with God be any different?

We Were Never Meant to Visit God

Some people treat God as though He lives in a building we visit once a week.

I don’t believe that’s what Jesus pointed toward.

When He spoke about the Kingdom of God being within us, I hear an invitation to something much more personal.

A living relationship.

Not an appointment.

Not a ritual.

Not a weekly obligation.

A relationship woven into every ordinary moment of life.

What If God Simply Wants You?

Not your performance.

Not your religious résumé.

Not perfect prayers.

Not impressive knowledge.

You.

The real you.

The version of you that laughs.

Questions.

Struggles.

Dreams.

Cries.

Sits quietly in the morning with nothing to ask for.

The version that simply says,

“I’m here.”

Love isn’t measured only by what we give.

Sometimes it’s measured by whether we’re willing to be present.

Prayer Doesn’t Have to Be a Shopping List

There’s nothing wrong with asking God for help.

We all need help.

But imagine if every conversation with someone you loved began with a list of requests.

Eventually, you’d wonder if they wanted a relationship with you—or simply what you could provide.

Perhaps prayer can become something more.

A conversation.

A moment of gratitude.

A time of listening.

A walk.

Silence shared together.

Moments when nothing needs to be accomplished.

Only experienced.

Maybe We’ve Been Asking the Wrong Question

Instead of asking,

“Why doesn’t God speak to me more?”

Maybe we should ask,

“How often have I simply been available to listen?”

Not because God demands our attention.

Because every meaningful relationship grows through mutual presence.

An Invitation

I don’t know exactly how God experiences time, emotion, or relationship.

None of us do.

But I do know this.

If love longs for relationship, then perhaps the greatest gift we can offer isn’t another perfectly worded prayer.

Perhaps it’s our attention.

Five quiet minutes.

A walk in nature.

A moment of gratitude before a meal.

A conversation without an agenda.

A willingness to be fully present.

Not because we’re trying to earn God’s love.

But because love naturally desires relationship.

So today, before asking for anything…

Pause.

Be still.

Say thank you.

Listen.

And if nothing else, simply spend a few moments with the One who, according to your faith, has never stopped being present with you.

Sometimes the deepest expression of love isn’t found in what we ask for.

It’s found in choosing to stay a little longer.
