Kundalini Energy: An Ancient Perspective on Human Transformation

Overview

Throughout history, nearly every civilization has attempted to answer the same question:

Why do some people experience profound moments of transformation that seem to change every part of who they are?

Some traditions describe enlightenment.

Others call it awakening.

Some speak of the Holy Spirit.

Others refer to divine presence, life force, or higher consciousness.

Within the yogic traditions of India, one of the most well-known concepts is kundalini.

For thousands of years, kundalini has been described as a dormant spiritual energy that, when awakened, leads to profound personal and spiritual transformation.

Whether someone understands kundalini literally, symbolically, psychologically, or spiritually, I believe it points toward something that has fascinated humanity for centuries:

The possibility that human beings possess far greater capacity for transformation than most of us ever realize.

What Is Kundalini?

In traditional yogic philosophy, kundalini is often described as a latent spiritual energy symbolically resting at the base of the spine.

Ancient texts describe this energy as rising through the body’s subtle energy centers, often called chakras, leading toward expanded awareness and spiritual realization.

These descriptions belong to specific spiritual traditions.

They are not descriptions of structures or energies that modern science has confirmed as physical systems within the body.

That distinction matters.

Spiritual language and scientific language often describe human experience in very different ways.

Why Has Kundalini Fascinated So Many People?

Because countless individuals across cultures describe experiences that feel deeply transformative.

Some report a profound sense of peace.

Others describe heightened awareness.

Greater compassion.

A stronger sense of purpose.

A desire to simplify their lives.

A feeling that old fears and identities are falling away.

Others report periods of emotional intensity, confusion, or dramatic life changes as they reevaluate long-held beliefs and habits.

These experiences are interpreted differently depending on a person’s culture, beliefs, and worldview.

Transformation Can Feel Intense

One reason kundalini has gained so much attention is that many people describe the process as physically, emotionally, and spiritually significant.

People have reported experiences such as:

These experiences are not unique to kundalini traditions, and they do not necessarily indicate a kundalini awakening. Major life changes, psychological growth, stress, grief, and many other factors can produce similar experiences.

Discernment is essential.

The Other 95%

One of the central ideas in The Other 95% is that much of human behavior is guided by subconscious programming.

Most people spend years reacting automatically to beliefs, fears, habits, and emotional patterns they never consciously chose.

Whether someone describes their transformation as spiritual awakening, personal growth, or kundalini, one thing often remains consistent:

Old patterns begin to lose their control.

That process can feel uncomfortable because our identity is changing.

The Divine Algorithm

When I speak about The Divine Algorithm, I am not referring to kundalini specifically.

Rather, I am describing my belief that creation reflects an underlying order through which human beings can become increasingly aligned with truth.

For me, genuine spiritual growth is measured less by extraordinary experiences and more by lasting transformation.

Does it make us more compassionate?

More humble?

More truthful?

More loving?

More patient?

More willing to serve others?

Those are the questions that matter most.

Extraordinary experiences may inspire us.

Character reveals whether they have truly changed us.

Experience Is Not the Destination

One of the greatest misunderstandings in spirituality is believing that powerful experiences are the goal.

I don’t believe they are.

A profound meditation.

A mystical moment.

An overwhelming sense of peace.

These may become meaningful milestones.

But they are not the destination.

The destination is transformation.

If an experience leaves us more compassionate, more honest, and more deeply committed to truth, it has lasting value.

If it simply becomes another story we tell about ourselves, we may have missed its greatest lesson.

Staying Grounded

One lesson that appears across many authentic spiritual traditions is the importance of remaining grounded.

Continue caring for your body.

Continue serving others.

Continue learning.

Continue asking honest questions.

Remain humble.

Remain teachable.

The deepest spiritual growth rarely pulls us away from everyday life.

It usually helps us become more fully present within it.

Science and Spirituality

As someone who studies neuroscience, psychology, and human behavior, I find it fascinating that practices such as meditation, breathwork, prayer, and contemplative silence can influence attention, emotional regulation, and stress responses.

Science can explore many of these effects.

Whether those experiences are understood as expressions of kundalini, psychological transformation, spiritual awakening, or some combination of these depends upon the framework a person brings to them.

I believe both scientific inquiry and sincere spiritual exploration have value.

Neither should fear honest investigation.

Final Thoughts

Kundalini has inspired seekers for centuries because it points toward a possibility that resonates across cultures:

Human beings are capable of profound transformation.

Whether you understand kundalini as symbolic, spiritual, psychological, or something else entirely, I believe its greatest invitation is not to chase extraordinary experiences.

It is to become a more authentic human being.

To release fear.

To question unconscious programming.

To seek truth with humility.

To cultivate wisdom.

To love more deeply.

And to live with greater awareness of the remarkable mystery we call life.

For me, that is where every genuine spiritual path eventually leads.

Not toward becoming extraordinary.

But toward becoming fully awake to who we were always capable of becoming.
