Spiritual Awakening and the Nervous System: Why Your Body Sometimes Feels Like It’s Breaking Down

Overview

Over the years, I’ve had countless people reach out to me with the same frightening question.

“Am I losing my mind?”

Their heart suddenly races.

Their sleep changes.

Their emotions feel unpredictable.

They become unusually sensitive to noise, light, or crowds.

Old memories begin surfacing.

Their anxiety increases even though their life may actually be improving.

Some describe an overwhelming sense that they’re changing in ways they can’t explain.

Others wonder if something is physically wrong.

The first thing I always encourage is not to make assumptions.

These experiences can have many different causes, and it’s important not to automatically label them as a spiritual awakening. Changes in physical or mental health deserve appropriate attention, and it’s wise to rule out medical conditions rather than assuming every symptom has a spiritual explanation.

At the same time, I’ve also seen many people moving through profound periods of personal transformation where their nervous system is adapting to significant emotional, psychological, and spiritual change.

Understanding that relationship can remove an incredible amount of unnecessary fear.

Your Nervous System Learns Your Entire Life

Your nervous system isn’t simply wiring that carries electrical signals.

It’s constantly learning.

Every joyful experience…

Every disappointment…

Every relationship…

Every success…

Every fear…

Every environment…

Your subconscious is always gathering information about what feels safe, what feels dangerous, and how it believes you should respond.

Over time, these patterns become automatic.

Most people call it personality.

Often, it’s conditioning.

Awareness Changes More Than Your Thoughts

One of the central ideas behind the Divine Algorithm—a framework I introduced in 2024—is that genuine awareness doesn’t simply change what you think.

It changes how you experience yourself.

When people begin questioning old beliefs, becoming more honest with themselves, processing unresolved emotions, or changing long-established patterns, the nervous system often has to adapt.

That adjustment isn’t always comfortable.

Imagine wearing shoes that are two sizes too small your entire life.

The first time your feet finally have room to move naturally, it may feel unfamiliar.

Not because freedom is wrong.

Because your body became accustomed to restriction.

The same thing can happen emotionally.

The Body Doesn’t Always Distinguish Between Change and Danger

One of the remarkable characteristics of the nervous system is that it often treats unfamiliar experiences cautiously.

Even positive change can feel uncomfortable.

A healthier relationship.

A new career.

Greater peace.

More honesty.

Freedom from old habits.

All of these require the nervous system to update what it considers normal.

Sometimes people mistake that temporary discomfort as evidence they’re moving in the wrong direction.

Often it’s simply evidence that something old is changing.

When Old Programs Begin Surfacing

I’ve noticed something while helping people through periods of deep personal transformation.

Many become surprised when old emotions suddenly appear.

Fear they thought they’d already overcome.

Childhood memories.

Grief.

Shame.

Anger.

Self-doubt.

It’s tempting to believe these emotions are returning because you’re failing.

I often see the opposite.

Sometimes they become visible because, for the first time, you have enough awareness and stability to actually notice them.

You can’t heal what remains hidden.

Awareness brings forgotten patterns into the light.

Not to punish you.

To free you.

Why the Body Sometimes Feels Overwhelmed

When someone has lived under chronic stress for years, the nervous system often becomes accustomed to operating in survival mode.

Then something begins changing.

Perhaps they slow down.

Perhaps they begin therapy.

Perhaps they spend more time in nature.

Perhaps they become more honest with themselves.

Perhaps they finally begin living in alignment with their values.

The body may respond in unexpected ways while adjusting.

This doesn’t mean every uncomfortable sensation is part of awakening. It simply reminds us that our biology and our inner life are deeply connected.

Sometimes the nervous system needs time to learn that it no longer has to stay on constant alert.

Creating the Conditions for Regulation

People often ask me what they should do if they feel overwhelmed during a period of significant personal growth.

My answer is surprisingly simple.

Slow down.

Breathe deeply.

Prioritize restorative sleep.

Spend time in nature.

Move your body regularly.

Eat foods that genuinely nourish you.

Reduce unnecessary stimulation.

Create moments of silence.

Talk with people you trust.

None of these eliminate every challenge.

But they help create conditions where your nervous system can begin settling instead of constantly reacting.

Healing is rarely about forcing the body.

It’s about supporting the remarkable intelligence already built into it.

Don’t Chase Extraordinary Experiences

Another pattern I’ve observed is that some people become attached to dramatic spiritual experiences.

They begin searching for more signs.

More visions.

More emotional highs.

More extraordinary moments.

I gently encourage something different.

Become present.

The goal isn’t to collect spiritual experiences.

The goal is to become a more loving, peaceful, honest, and compassionate human being.

That’s where lasting transformation becomes visible.

The Divine Algorithm Is About Alignment

The Divine Algorithm isn’t built upon fear.

It isn’t about convincing yourself that every sensation has a mystical explanation.

It’s about learning to live in greater alignment with the intelligence already woven throughout your life.

As fear decreases…

As awareness increases…

As old conditioning begins giving way to conscious living…

The nervous system gradually learns a new rhythm.

Not the rhythm of constant survival.

The rhythm of presence.

The Kingdom Within Doesn’t Create Fear

Jesus said,

“The Kingdom of God is within you.”

I’ve often reflected on those words while helping people navigate seasons of profound change.

If the Kingdom is within…

Then fear is not the destination.

Peace is.

Not temporary excitement.

Not emotional chaos.

Peace.

That doesn’t mean every step feels easy.

Growth rarely does.

But over time, something beautiful begins happening.

The mind becomes quieter.

The body becomes less reactive.

Old fears lose their grip.

Compassion grows.

Clarity deepens.

Not because you’ve escaped life.

Because you’ve stopped living from unconscious programming.

So if you’re walking through a season of deep personal transformation, don’t rush to label every experience.

Stay curious.

Support your body.

Remain grounded.

Seek wisdom rather than certainty.

And remember that real growth isn’t measured by how dramatic the journey feels.

It’s measured by how much more present, loving, peaceful, and authentic you become along the way.

Because that’s where the deepest transformation has always been leading.
