How a Spiritual Awakening Can Appear to Be Psychological Trouble

Overview

There is a question that has followed humanity for thousands of years:

What happens when your old way of seeing the world begins to fall apart?

For some people, it feels exciting.

For others, it feels terrifying.

Your beliefs begin to crumble. Your priorities change. The things that once motivated you suddenly seem empty. You become more sensitive to people, environments, and conversations. You notice patterns you never noticed before. You begin asking questions that few people around you seem interested in asking.

If you’ve experienced this, you may have wondered whether something is wrong with you.

I don’t believe asking deeper questions is a sign that something is wrong.

Sometimes it’s the beginning of discovering who you truly are.

What Is a Spiritual Awakening?

A spiritual awakening isn’t simply adopting a new religion or believing different ideas.

It’s an internal shift.

It’s the gradual realization that much of your identity may have been built from conditioning, habits, expectations, fears, and beliefs you never consciously chose.

In my work through Who Programmed You?, I call much of this hidden conditioning The Other 95%—the subconscious patterns that quietly influence our thoughts, emotions, decisions, and behaviors every day.

A spiritual awakening often begins when those subconscious patterns become visible.

That process can be incredibly liberating.

It can also feel incredibly uncomfortable.

Why Awakening Can Feel So Disorienting

Imagine spending your entire life wearing glasses without realizing it.

Everything you’ve ever seen has been filtered through those lenses.

Then one day, someone removes them.

The world doesn’t necessarily become clearer overnight.

It simply becomes different.

The same thing can happen internally.

Questions that never crossed your mind suddenly become impossible to ignore.

Why am I here?

What is God?

Why have I believed what I’ve believed?

Am I living authentically?

What parts of me are genuinely mine?

Those questions can shake the very foundation of your identity.

That doesn’t automatically mean something is psychologically wrong.

It may mean your worldview is changing.

Why Others May Misunderstand What You’re Experiencing

Most people understand reality through the framework they’ve always known.

When someone begins questioning deeply held assumptions, friends or family may become concerned.

They may say:

“You’re acting different.”

“You’ve changed.”

“You overthink everything.”

“You’ve become distant.”

Sometimes they’re simply observing that you’re changing.

Sometimes they may misunderstand what you’re trying to express.

Change can be uncomfortable—not only for the person experiencing it, but also for the people around them.

Discernment Matters

Not every unusual experience is a spiritual awakening.

And not every psychological struggle is spiritual.

Life is rarely that simple.

Profound spiritual growth can coexist with stress, anxiety, grief, or other mental health challenges. Likewise, someone can have deeply meaningful spiritual experiences without those experiences indicating a mental illness.

Discernment is essential.

A genuine awakening should gradually lead toward greater honesty, humility, compassion, wisdom, responsibility, and love—not a growing inability to function or care for yourself and others.

Common Experiences People Describe During an Awakening

Many people report experiences such as:

Not everyone experiences these changes in the same way.

There is no universal timeline.

Every journey is different.

The Collapse Before the Growth

One of the hardest parts of awakening is that it often feels like losing yourself.

But perhaps what you’re losing isn’t your true self.

Perhaps you’re losing the version of yourself that was built from fear, expectations, social conditioning, and unconscious programming.

This is one reason I often ask a simple question:

Who programmed you?

Not to assign blame.

But to encourage awareness.

Many of our deepest beliefs were absorbed long before we were old enough to evaluate them.

Awakening often begins when we finally do.

The Divine Algorithm

Through years of studying human behavior, spirituality, subconscious patterns, and personal transformation, I’ve come to believe that every person carries an inner capacity for wisdom that becomes clearer as fear, ego, and conditioning lose their grip.

I call this The Divine Algorithm.

For me, it isn’t about hearing voices or receiving secret knowledge.

It’s about becoming increasingly aligned with truth through humility, discernment, self-reflection, prayer, love, and a willingness to keep learning.

The quieter we become internally, the easier it often is to recognize the difference between fear and wisdom.

The Importance of Staying Grounded

One of the greatest mistakes people make during a spiritual awakening is believing that every thought, coincidence, or emotional experience must carry profound meaning.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Growth requires curiosity and discernment.

Stay grounded.

Continue learning.

Remain teachable.

Care for your physical health, your relationships, and your responsibilities. Spiritual growth doesn’t require abandoning everyday life. If anything, genuine growth should gradually help you become more present, more compassionate, and more responsible within it.

What Transformation Actually Looks Like

The goal isn’t to become someone who escapes reality.

The goal is to become someone who sees reality more clearly.

Someone who loves more deeply.

Someone who reacts less from fear.

Someone who lives with greater integrity.

Someone who finds peace that isn’t dependent on external circumstances.

That kind of transformation rarely happens overnight.

It unfolds one honest decision at a time.

Final Thoughts

If your life feels like it’s changing from the inside out, don’t rush to label every experience.

Be patient with yourself.

Ask difficult questions.

Study widely.

Pray sincerely.

Listen carefully.

Test your assumptions.

Allow truth to reshape you wherever it leads.

In my experience, a genuine spiritual awakening isn’t about becoming disconnected from reality.

It’s about becoming more fully awake to it.

And when that happens, the greatest discovery is often not that you’ve become someone new.

It’s that you’ve finally begun uncovering who you were created to be all along.
