Spiritual but Not Religious: What I Mean When I Say I Want a Relationship With God More Than a Label

Overview

One of the phrases you hear more often today is:

"I'm spiritual, but not religious."

For some people, it's a rejection of religion.

For others, it's simply a way of saying they believe in God but don't belong to a church.

Some use it because they've been hurt by religious institutions.

Others use it because they believe there must be more to life than rules and rituals.

Over the years, I've had countless conversations with people who describe themselves this way.

And while everyone's story is different, I've found they usually share one thing in common.

They're searching for something real.

Not another debate.

Not another denomination.

Not another list of rules.

They're searching for truth.

They're searching for God.

They're searching for peace.

They're searching for purpose.

In many ways, so am I.

What Does "Spiritual but Not Religious" Mean?

For me, being spiritual but not religious doesn't mean rejecting God.

It means refusing to confuse a relationship with God for membership in a system.

Religion can be beautiful.

It can preserve wisdom, build community, inspire generosity, and encourage people to live meaningful lives.

Many people have found tremendous hope and purpose through their faith communities, and I deeply respect that.

But I also believe it's possible to participate in religion while never truly knowing God.

Just as it's possible to seek God sincerely while still asking difficult questions.

My focus has never been on labels.

My focus has always been on truth.

I Believe God Is Bigger Than Our Labels

Throughout history, people have given God countless names.

Different cultures.

Different languages.

Different traditions.

Different understandings.

Yet none of those names can fully describe the infinite.

I often say that "God" is a title we use to describe the One beyond complete human understanding.

No word can contain Him.

No denomination owns Him.

No single person speaks for Him.

The moment we believe we've completely explained God, we've probably made God much smaller than He truly is.

I believe God invites us into a relationship, not merely agreement with ideas.

The Difference Between Religion and Spirituality

People often ask whether religion and spirituality are opposites.

I don't believe they have to be.

Religion can provide structure.

Community.

Tradition.

Shared worship.

Accountability.

Generations of accumulated wisdom.

Those are valuable gifts.

Spirituality is something different.

It's personal.

It's your relationship with God.

Your willingness to seek truth.

Your desire to become more loving, compassionate, humble, and aware.

It's the inner transformation that no one else can experience for you.

Ideally, religion and spirituality strengthen one another.

But when religion becomes more important than the relationship it's meant to nurture, something essential can be lost.

Why So Many People Walk Away From Religion

Many people who describe themselves as spiritual but not religious aren't rejecting God.

They're responding to experiences that deeply wounded them.

Some experienced hypocrisy.

Some encountered judgment instead of compassion.

Some felt pressured to stop asking honest questions.

Some saw people profess faith while living in ways that contradicted it.

Those experiences are real.

And they matter.

But I don't believe disappointment with people should automatically become disappointment with God.

Human beings are imperfect.

That includes religious people.

Including me.

Our imperfections shouldn't prevent us from continuing the search for truth.

The Kingdom Within

One of the ideas that has shaped my life most deeply is the teaching that the Kingdom of God is within you.

To me, that changes everything.

It means my relationship with God isn't limited to a building.

It isn't confined to one day each week.

It isn't dependent upon someone else speaking on my behalf.

God is not distant.

God is present.

That doesn't mean we become God.

It means I believe God has placed within every person the capacity to know Him personally through love, truth, wisdom, conscience, and the quiet guidance that continually calls us toward a better way of living.

The Divine Algorithm

Throughout my work I describe an inner guidance system I call The Divine Algorithm.

I believe every person carries an inner awareness through which God continually invites us toward truth.

That guidance often comes through intuition.

Through conviction.

Through recurring life patterns.

Through peace.

Through moments of unexpected clarity.

The Divine Algorithm isn't a replacement for faith.

It's a way of describing how I believe God continues communicating with us today.

Not through constant noise.

But through quiet awareness.

Questions Are Not the Enemy of Faith

One of the healthiest things I've learned is that asking questions doesn't weaken faith.

It often strengthens it.

Real faith isn't afraid of honest inquiry.

If something is true, it doesn't fear investigation.

I encourage people to ask difficult questions.

Read widely.

Think deeply.

Listen carefully.

Remain humble.

Truth has nothing to fear from sincere seekers.

What Does It Mean to Be Spiritual?

To me, being spiritual isn't about collecting information.

It's about becoming someone different.

More compassionate.

More peaceful.

More forgiving.

More patient.

More honest.

More courageous.

More loving.

If our beliefs never change the way we treat people, we've probably missed something important.

Spiritual growth isn't measured by how much we know.

It's measured by who we're becoming.

My Daily Spiritual Practice

People often ask me what spirituality looks like in everyday life.

For me, it isn't complicated.

I begin with stillness.

Focused breathing.

Prayer.

Reflection.

Journaling.

Reading.

Listening.

Paying attention to recurring patterns in my life.

Trying to respond with love instead of fear.

Seeking truth instead of simply defending my opinions.

No elaborate rituals.

No performance.

Just a daily commitment to becoming more aware of God, myself, and the people around me.

My Hope for You

Whether you consider yourself religious...

Spiritual...

Both...

Or neither...

My hope is that you never stop searching for truth.

Don't let fear stop your questions.

Don't let disappointment stop your faith.

Don't let labels become more important than your relationship with God.

I believe God is far closer than many people imagine.

Not waiting for perfection.

Not demanding performance.

But patiently inviting each of us into a deeper relationship built on love, truth, humility, and awareness.

For me, that's what it means to be spiritual.

Not rejecting religion.

Not chasing labels.

Simply seeking to know God more deeply and allowing that relationship to transform every part of my life.

Because I believe the greatest journey we will ever take isn't toward a religion.

It's toward the One who has been calling us all along.
