The Plateau Phase of Awakening: What to Do When the Initial High Fades

Overview

Almost everyone talks about the awakening.

Very few people talk about what comes after it.

The excitement.

The breakthroughs.

The synchronicities.

The feeling that everything suddenly makes sense.

The overwhelming sense that you’ve discovered something you’ve been searching for your entire life.

For many people, this is the beginning of a profound transformation.

Then something unexpected happens.

The excitement begins to fade.

The synchronicities don’t seem as frequent.

Meditation doesn’t feel as deep.

Prayer feels quieter.

Life becomes… ordinary again.

For many people, this is where doubt quietly enters.

“Did I lose it?”

“Was any of it even real?”

“Why don’t I feel what I felt before?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself those questions, you’re not failing.

You’re growing.

In fact, I believe one of the most important stages of awakening begins precisely when the emotional high starts to disappear.

Every Relationship Begins With Excitement

Think about every meaningful relationship you’ve ever had.

The beginning is usually filled with excitement.

Everything feels new.

Conversations last for hours.

Small moments feel extraordinary.

Then, over time, something changes.

The excitement naturally settles.

Not because the relationship has become less meaningful.

Because it has become more real.

Depth eventually replaces novelty.

I believe awakening follows a similar pattern.

The beginning often captures your attention.

The plateau begins transforming your character.

Awakening Was Never Meant to Be an Emotional Addiction

One of the biggest traps on any spiritual path is becoming attached to extraordinary experiences.

People begin chasing feelings.

Visions.

Signs.

Synchronicities.

Peak emotional states.

Before long, they spend more time searching for the next experience than living what they’ve already learned.

I’ve discovered something much more valuable.

Peace that doesn’t depend on excitement.

Wisdom that remains even when emotions are quiet.

Presence that isn’t dependent upon extraordinary moments.

That’s a much stronger foundation.

The Divine Algorithm Was Never About Constant Highs

One of the central ideas behind the Divine Algorithm—a framework I introduced in 2024—is that life isn’t asking us to escape ordinary moments.

It’s inviting us to become fully present within them.

We often imagine spiritual growth as climbing a mountain where every step feels more exciting than the last.

Real growth rarely works that way.

Growth often looks repetitive.

Quiet.

Ordinary.

Consistent.

Like exercising.

Like learning an instrument.

Like building a meaningful marriage.

The deepest transformation isn’t usually dramatic.

It’s cumulative.

The Plateau Is Where Integration Happens

When the excitement fades, something remarkable becomes possible.

Integration.

Knowledge slowly becomes wisdom.

Ideas become habits.

Habits become character.

Character becomes the way you naturally live.

During the early stages of awakening, you’re discovering new truths.

During the plateau, those truths begin discovering you.

They move from your mind into your nervous system.

Into your relationships.

Into your work.

Into the way you speak to strangers.

Into the way you respond when life becomes difficult.

That’s when transformation becomes authentic.

Trust the Quiet Seasons

Nature has taught me more than almost any classroom.

Look at a tree.

Most people celebrate spring.

The blossoms.

The new growth.

The visible beauty.

Few people appreciate winter.

Yet winter quietly prepares everything that spring eventually reveals.

The same is true within us.

Some seasons are meant for expansion.

Others are meant for deepening.

The absence of excitement doesn’t mean the absence of growth.

Sometimes the deepest roots grow where no one can see them.

Stop Measuring Your Growth by Your Feelings

This may be one of the most freeing lessons I’ve ever learned.

Feelings are real.

They are not always reliable measurements of progress.

Some days you’ll feel deeply connected.

Some days you’ll feel distracted.

Some days you’ll feel inspired.

Some days you’ll simply do the work without emotional reward.

Don’t confuse emotional intensity with spiritual maturity.

The person who quietly chooses kindness on an ordinary Tuesday may be demonstrating more genuine transformation than someone constantly chasing extraordinary experiences.

Return to the Practices That Quiet the Noise

Whenever I feel disconnected, I don’t immediately assume something is wrong.

Instead, I return to the practices that have always helped me become present.

I spend time in nature.

I slow my breathing.

I watch a sunrise.

I step away from unnecessary noise.

I put down my phone.

I pay attention.

I stop trying so hard.

Interestingly, I often discover that what disappeared wasn’t my connection.

It was simply my awareness of it.

The one within never left.

My attention wandered.

The Plateau Protects You From Spiritual Ego

There’s another gift hidden inside these quieter seasons.

Humility.

When awakening first begins, it’s easy to believe you’ve discovered something everyone else has missed.

I’ve seen people become attached to being “awake.”

Eventually that identity becomes another form of ego.

Life has a gentle way of dissolving that illusion.

The plateau reminds us that growth isn’t about becoming special.

It’s about becoming more loving.

More patient.

More present.

More honest.

More compassionate.

If your awakening doesn’t make you easier to love…

It may simply be making you more convinced of your own importance.

That’s not awakening.

That’s another mask.

Continue Living the Ordinary Exceptionally Well

I’ve come to believe that the extraordinary life is built through ordinary moments.

The way you greet people.

The way you care for your body.

The way you forgive.

The way you listen.

The way you keep your word.

The way you remain calm during difficulty.

These quiet choices shape your life far more than occasional spiritual experiences.

Don’t underestimate them.

The Kingdom Within Doesn’t Come and Go

Jesus never described the Kingdom of God as an emotional experience.

He described it as a reality.

“The Kingdom of God is within you.”

Not only during profound meditation.

Not only during powerful prayer.

Not only when synchronicities seem to appear everywhere.

Within you.

Always.

Sometimes we simply become more aware of it than others.

The plateau isn’t the end of awakening.

It’s the end of depending on excitement to convince you that awakening is real.

That’s an important difference.

Because eventually your trust shifts.

You stop looking for constant signs.

You stop chasing emotional highs.

You stop measuring your progress by extraordinary moments.

Instead, you begin recognizing something far more beautiful.

The one within has been faithfully present through every season.

The excitement.

The silence.

The breakthroughs.

The waiting.

The questions.

The certainty.

The mystery.

Nothing was ever lost.

The path simply became quieter.

And in that quiet, you begin discovering a deeper kind of faith.

Not faith that depends on dramatic experiences.

But faith born from living each ordinary day in quiet alignment with the wisdom that has gently guided you all along.

Perhaps that’s what spiritual maturity really looks like.

Not standing on the mountaintop forever.

But learning to walk through the valleys with the same peace you found at the summit.
