What Is Reiki? An Honest Look at Energy Healing

Overview

Reiki has become one of the most widely recognized forms of energy healing in the world.

Some people describe it as deeply relaxing and transformative.

Others are skeptical and question whether it works at all.

So what is Reiki?

The honest answer is that it depends on whether you’re asking about its history, its practice, or what science currently knows about it.

From my perspective, it’s important to separate history from evidence and remain open without making claims that go beyond what we know.

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui. Practitioners typically place their hands lightly on or just above a person’s body with the intention of promoting relaxation, well-being, and healing.

Many people who receive Reiki report feeling deeply peaceful.

Some describe warmth.

Others experience a sense of calm, emotional release, or renewed clarity.

Those experiences are real to the people who have them.

The larger question is why they happen.

Scientific research has found that Reiki may help some people feel more relaxed and may reduce stress or anxiety in certain settings. Some studies suggest it can improve a person’s sense of well-being, particularly alongside conventional medical care.

However, there is currently no strong scientific evidence demonstrating that Reiki transfers a measurable healing energy or cures disease.

That distinction matters.

We don’t need to exaggerate something in order to appreciate its potential value.

One thing we do know is that relaxation itself has powerful effects on the body.

When the nervous system shifts away from chronic stress, breathing slows.

Heart rate often becomes steadier.

Muscles relax.

The body becomes more capable of rest and recovery.

Modern neuroscience continues showing us that our mental and emotional state influences our biology in remarkable ways.

Perhaps part of what people experience during Reiki comes from creating an environment where the body feels safe enough to let go of constant tension.

That alone can be incredibly meaningful.

The Divine Algorithm reminds me that healing is rarely just physical.

The mind affects the body.

The body affects the mind.

Our relationships influence both.

So do our beliefs, our emotions, our environment, and our relationship with God.

Healing is often much more interconnected than we imagine.

Personally, I believe we should be careful about assigning supernatural explanations to experiences we don’t yet fully understand.

At the same time, I don’t think we should dismiss every experience simply because science hasn’t explained all of it.

History is full of discoveries that were once misunderstood.

Curiosity and humility belong together.

For me, the most important question isn’t whether someone’s hands possess a special energy.

The more important question is this:

Did the experience help the person become more peaceful?

More present?

More hopeful?

More connected to themselves, to others, and to God?

Those are meaningful outcomes.

But I also believe no healing practice should replace appropriate medical care when it is needed.

The human body is incredibly complex.

Wisdom means using the best knowledge available while remaining open to continued learning.

Ultimately, I don’t believe healing comes from chasing one technique.

It comes from caring for the whole person.

Rest.

Nutrition.

Movement.

Healthy relationships.

Prayer.

Meditation.

Forgiveness.

Time in nature.

Purpose.

Love.

These are not separate from healing.

They are part of it.

Whether someone chooses to explore Reiki or not, I believe the deeper invitation remains the same.

Become still.

Pay attention.

Listen to your body.

Care for your mind.

Open your heart.

Strengthen your relationship with God.

Because the greatest healing isn’t simply the absence of illness.

It’s becoming more fully alive.
