When Everything Feels Heavy: Inner Guidance Through Dark Seasons

Overview

There are seasons in life when everything feels heavier than it should.

You wake up tired even after sleeping.

Simple decisions feel overwhelming.

Things that once brought you joy no longer seem to reach you.

You smile because it’s expected, but inside you feel disconnected from yourself.

If you’ve ever experienced a season like that, I want you to know something.

You’re not alone.

Every human life has valleys.

No one lives on the mountaintop forever.

The mistake many people make is believing that because life feels heavy today, it will always feel that way.

It won’t.

Seasons change.

They always do.

Darkness Doesn’t Mean You’re Going the Wrong Direction

One of the greatest misconceptions I see is the belief that every difficult season means you’ve somehow failed or fallen out of alignment.

I don’t believe that’s true.

Some of the greatest periods of growth begin with uncertainty.

A seed spends time buried in darkness before anyone sees new life emerge.

A caterpillar disappears into a cocoon before becoming a butterfly.

Nature reminds us over and over again that what looks like an ending is often preparation for a beginning.

Why should we expect our own lives to be any different?

Stop Fighting Every Feeling

When life becomes difficult, our first instinct is often to make the discomfort disappear.

We distract ourselves.

Stay busy.

Scroll endlessly.

Eat more.

Work more.

Avoid being alone with our thoughts.

But emotions have a purpose.

They carry information.

Ignoring them doesn’t make them disappear.

It usually causes them to wait patiently until we’re finally willing to listen.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isn’t escape the feeling.

It’s become curious about it.

Ask yourself,

“What is this season trying to teach me?”

That question opens doors that resistance never will.

The Quiet Voice Doesn’t Leave

During dark seasons, many people tell me they feel as though they’ve lost their connection with God.

I understand why they feel that way.

But I don’t believe God disappears.

I believe our fear often becomes so loud that it’s difficult to recognize the quieter guidance that’s still there.

Fear shouts.

Peace whispers.

Anxiety demands immediate attention.

Wisdom patiently waits.

The challenge isn’t always that guidance has stopped.

Sometimes it’s that our suffering has become the loudest voice we’re listening to.

The Divine Algorithm Doesn’t Stop Working

One of the questions I hear most often is,

“If I’m living in alignment, why is this happening?”

It’s a fair question.

Within the Divine Algorithm—a framework I introduced in 2024—I don’t believe alignment means a life without challenges.

It means learning to navigate challenges without losing yourself.

Some seasons are about building.

Others are about letting go.

Some are about movement.

Others are about stillness.

If you judge every difficult season as failure, you’ll miss the lessons that only difficulty can teach.

The Divine Algorithm isn’t only present when life is easy.

Sometimes it’s doing its deepest work when nothing seems to make sense.

The Lessons Nature Quietly Teaches

Spend enough time in nature and you’ll notice something.

Nothing blooms all year long.

Trees lose their leaves.

Fields become bare.

Winter arrives without asking permission.

Yet beneath the surface, life continues.

Roots grow where no one can see them.

Preparation happens in silence.

The world doesn’t panic because winter comes.

It trusts spring.

Maybe we should learn to do the same.

Jesus Never Promised an Easy Path

One of the things I appreciate most about the teachings of Jesus is that He never pretended life would always be easy.

He experienced rejection.

Misunderstanding.

Grief.

Betrayal.

Suffering.

Yet through it all, He continually returned to prayer, solitude, and trust in God.

That speaks to me.

Not because it removes hardship.

But because it shows us how to move through it without allowing hardship to define us.

Practical Ways to Navigate Heavy Seasons

When everything feels overwhelming, stop trying to solve your entire future.

Come back to today.

Go outside.

Feel the sun on your skin.

Take a slow walk without your phone.

Breathe deeply.

Drink more water.

Write down what’s on your heart.

Pray.

Then become quiet enough to listen.

Talk with someone you trust.

Accept help when it’s offered.

And if your heaviness is intense, lasts for a long time, or makes it difficult to function or leaves you feeling hopeless, it’s important to reach out to a qualified mental health professional or your healthcare provider. Seeking support isn’t a lack of faith or strength. It can be an important part of healing.

None of these actions may instantly change your circumstances.

But they can change how you move through them.

One small step today is more powerful than waiting for the perfect tomorrow.

Trust the Process You Cannot Yet See

Looking back on my own life, I’ve noticed something.

Many seasons that felt confusing at the time eventually became some of the most important chapters of my journey.

Not because I enjoyed them.

But because they changed me.

They taught me patience.

Humility.

Compassion.

Discernment.

They stripped away things I thought I needed until I discovered what truly mattered.

I don’t believe every painful event happens for a specific reason we can identify.

But I do believe we can choose how we respond to hardship, and that choice shapes who we become.

Keep Moving Forward

One phrase has carried me through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Keep moving forward.

Not because every day feels easy.

Not because every answer is clear.

But because standing still in fear has never revealed the path ahead.

Sometimes the next step is all you’re meant to see.

Take it anyway.

The light doesn’t always appear at the end of the journey.

Sometimes it appears one step at a time as you continue walking.

If life feels heavy today, don’t assume this chapter is the whole story.

It isn’t.

Breathe.

Be present.

Trust what you know instead of fearing what you don’t.

The same quiet guidance that has always been available is still with you.

You don’t have to force it.

You don’t have to chase it.

You simply have to become still enough to recognize it.

And then…

keep moving forward.
