Why Does Every Generation Believe It Is the First to Truly Spiritually Awaken?

Overview

Every few years, a familiar message begins spreading across the world.

“Humanity is finally waking up.”

“This generation is different.”

“People have never questioned reality like this before.”

“We’re entering a new age.”

Social media fills with videos explaining that something unprecedented is happening.

Books are written.

Movements are born.

Millions of people begin feeling as though they’re part of the first generation to truly see beyond the illusion.

Then I remember something.

People have been saying almost exactly the same thing for thousands of years.

And that realization changed the way I understand awakening.

Every Generation Believes It Is Living Through the Great Awakening

The early followers of Jesus believed they were witnessing the fulfillment of God’s promises.

The Desert Fathers withdrew into solitude seeking deeper communion with God.

Mystics throughout Christianity wrote about awakening to divine reality.

Buddhist monks devoted their lives to enlightenment.

Hindu sages explored consciousness long before modern psychology existed.

Sufi poets spoke of dissolving into divine love.

Indigenous traditions preserved profound spiritual wisdom for countless generations.

Every century has produced people convinced they were discovering truths that the rest of society had forgotten.

Perhaps they weren’t wrong.

But neither were they the first.

Why Does It Feel So New?

When something transforms your own life, it naturally feels as though you’ve discovered something entirely new.

Think back to the first time you truly fell in love.

The first time you held your child.

The first sunrise that stopped you in your tracks.

The first time prayer became real instead of routine.

Those experiences feel completely original.

Not because they have never happened before…

Because they have never happened to you before.

Spiritual awakening works much the same way.

When your eyes begin opening, the whole world feels new.

The Other 95%

One of the central ideas in my work is what I call The Other 95%.

Much of life unfolds beneath conscious awareness.

Beliefs.

Habits.

Conditioning.

Assumptions.

Emotional patterns.

Then something shifts.

You begin questioning the story you’ve always believed.

You notice patterns.

You become more aware of your thoughts.

You ask deeper questions.

The world hasn’t suddenly changed overnight.

Your awareness has.

And awareness changes everything.

Jesus Didn’t Teach That Truth Had Just Begun

One of the things I appreciate about Jesus is that He rarely spoke as though truth had only now arrived.

Instead, He continually invited people back to what mattered most.

Love God.

Love your neighbor.

Forgive.

Be humble.

Seek first the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God is within—or, according to some translations, among—you (Luke 17:21).

Those teachings weren’t about creating an exclusive group that finally possessed all truth.

They were an invitation to live differently.

The Divine Algorithm

One of the ideas that has shaped my own life is what I call The Divine Algorithm.

I believe every generation receives its own opportunities to awaken.

Not because God changes.

Because humanity keeps forgetting.

Every generation develops new technologies.

New distractions.

New fears.

New comforts.

And every generation must rediscover timeless truths for itself.

The lessons remain.

The scenery changes.

Love still heals.

Fear still divides.

Gratitude still transforms.

Truth still matters.

Compassion still changes lives.

Every generation is invited into the same wisdom through different circumstances.

Awakening Is Personal Before It Is Global

Many people become fascinated with the idea of humanity awakening.

I understand why.

It’s exciting.

But I’ve learned something important.

The only awakening I can truly participate in is my own.

I cannot force someone else to see what they are not ready to see.

I cannot awaken another person’s conscience.

I cannot hurry someone else’s journey.

I can only become more honest.

More loving.

More aware.

More humble.

If enough individuals do that…

Perhaps societies begin changing too.

But it always starts with one heart at a time.

Beware of Spiritual Pride

Ironically, one of the greatest dangers of awakening is believing you’ve awakened more than everyone else.

The moment we begin thinking,

“I’m one of the few who really understands…”

We should probably become more cautious.

Real wisdom produces humility.

Not superiority.

Curiosity.

Not certainty about everything.

Compassion.

Not contempt.

If your awakening makes you love people less…

Something has gone wrong.

The Real Sign of Awakening

People often ask me how they know if they’re spiritually awakening.

My answer surprises them.

It’s not how many books you’ve read.

Not how many mystical experiences you’ve had.

Not how much hidden knowledge you’ve collected.

The real question is simple.

Are you becoming more loving?

More honest?

More peaceful?

More forgiving?

More courageous?

More compassionate?

Those qualities have always been the fruit of genuine spiritual growth.

Across cultures.

Across centuries.

Across generations.

We Stand on the Shoulders of Those Before Us

Every insight we discover was often prepared by someone who came before us.

Prophets.

Philosophers.

Scientists.

Mystics.

Artists.

Teachers.

Parents.

Grandparents.

We inherit far more wisdom than we realize.

Recognizing that doesn’t diminish our journey.

It deepens our gratitude.

Final Thoughts

Why does every generation believe it is the first to truly spiritually awaken?

Because awakening always feels new to the person experiencing it.

And that is a beautiful thing.

But awakening isn’t humanity discovering truth for the first time.

It’s each generation rediscovering truths that have patiently waited for them all along.

The Divine Algorithm has taught me that God’s invitation has remained remarkably consistent throughout history.

Wake up.

Love more.

Fear less.

Pay attention.

Seek truth.

Practice gratitude.

Forgive.

Become who you were created to be.

Every generation hears that invitation.

Some ignore it.

Some embrace it.

Some rediscover it after years of wandering.

The invitation has never changed.

Only the people receiving it.

Perhaps the greatest awakening isn’t realizing you’re living in a unique moment in history.

Perhaps it’s realizing that you are now participating in a conversation that God has been having with humanity since the very beginning.

And rather than making you feel greater than those who came before you…

That realization should make you feel profoundly grateful to walk beside them.
