How to Test and Validate Inner Guidance, Spiritual Experiences, and Visions
Overview
One of the most common questions people ask after beginning a spiritual journey is surprisingly simple.
“How do I know if what I’m experiencing is real?”
Was that intuition…
Or wishful thinking?
Was that inner guidance…
Or fear wearing a spiritual disguise?
Was that dream meaningful…
Or simply the mind processing the day?
Was that vision pointing toward truth…
Or was it my imagination?
These are important questions.
In fact, I believe the willingness to ask them is one of the healthiest signs of spiritual maturity.
Blindly believing every inner experience is unwise.
Dismissing every inner experience is equally limiting.
Wisdom lives somewhere between unquestioning acceptance and automatic skepticism.
This understanding became one of the reasons I introduced The Divine Algorithm in 2024. It isn’t a framework for believing every thought that enters your mind. It’s a framework for developing the awareness, discernment, humility, and lived experience necessary to recognize which inner impressions deserve your attention—and which should simply be observed and released.
Every Inner Experience Deserves Curiosity, Not Immediate Certainty
Human beings have incredibly rich inner lives.
We dream.
Imagine.
Remember.
Intuit.
Reflect.
Create.
Our minds constantly generate thoughts, emotions, and impressions.
Not every one of them carries the same weight.
I’ve found it helpful to approach inner experiences with curiosity before reaching conclusions.
Instead of immediately asking,
“Is this definitely true?”
Ask,
“What might this be inviting me to notice?”
Curiosity creates space for wisdom.
Certainty too quickly can close it.
Inner Guidance Usually Produces Clarity, Not Compulsion
One pattern I’ve noticed is that genuine inner guidance often feels different from fear.
Fear usually demands urgency.
It pressures.
It catastrophizes.
It insists that everything must happen immediately.
Healthy inner guidance tends to be quieter.
Steadier.
Patient.
It may invite action.
It rarely demands panic.
That doesn’t mean every meaningful insight feels comfortable.
But wisdom usually leaves room for thoughtful reflection instead of emotional pressure.
The Divine Algorithm Invites Discernment
One of the central ideas behind the Divine Algorithm is that awareness must always be accompanied by discernment.
Not every thought deserves your belief.
Not every emotion deserves your obedience.
Not every vision deserves immediate action.
Awareness notices.
Discernment evaluates.
Wisdom integrates.
Those three work best together.
Test Every Insight Against Its Fruit
One of the most practical questions I ask is:
What kind of life does this guidance produce?
Does it encourage greater compassion?
Greater honesty?
Greater humility?
Greater courage?
Greater peace?
Greater responsibility?
Or does it produce arrogance…
Fear…
Division…
Resentment…
Or an unhealthy sense of superiority?
Ideas eventually reveal themselves through the lives they create.
Healthy guidance consistently bears healthy fruit.

One mistake many people make is believing every spiritual experience requires immediate action.
I’ve found the opposite.
Some insights become clearer with time.
What feels confusing today often becomes obvious months later.
If something is genuinely meaningful, patience rarely weakens it.
It often strengthens it.
Truth doesn’t usually become less true because you gave it room to breathe.
Seek Confirmation Through Reality
I’ve learned not to evaluate inner experiences only by how powerful they feel.
Instead, I ask whether reality continues supporting them.
Does this guidance lead toward healthier relationships?
Better decisions?
Greater integrity?
A more compassionate life?
If an inner impression consistently moves you toward love, honesty, responsibility, and growth, that’s worth paying attention to.
If it continually pulls you away from reality, accountability, or healthy relationships, it’s worth examining more carefully.
Experience matters.
So do results.
Stay Humble
One of the greatest protections on any spiritual path is humility.
The moment we assume every thought we have is unquestionably correct…
Growth slows.
I’ve found it healthier to say,
“This is what I currently understand.”
Instead of,
“I could never be mistaken.”
Humility doesn’t weaken conviction.
It keeps conviction teachable.
And teachable people continue growing.
Don’t Become Dependent on Extraordinary Experiences
Many people spend years chasing signs.
Visions.
Dreams.
Messages.
Extraordinary experiences.
There’s nothing wrong with meaningful experiences.
But I’ve come to believe that the deepest transformation usually happens through ordinary faithfulness.
How you treat people.
How you respond to difficulty.
Whether your life reflects integrity.
Whether you’re becoming more loving.
Extraordinary experiences may inspire you.
Character is built through ordinary choices.
Let Wisdom Become Practical
One of the healthiest questions you can ask after any meaningful inner experience is:
“How should this change the way I live today?”
If the answer is,
Become more patient.
Forgive someone.
Tell the truth.
Spend more time with your family.
Serve your community.
Care for your health.
Practice gratitude.
Then the experience is already bearing fruit.
The purpose of insight isn’t admiration.
It’s transformation.
Final Thoughts
I don’t believe the goal of spiritual growth is collecting extraordinary experiences.
I believe it’s becoming an extraordinary human being.
The Divine Algorithm isn’t about convincing yourself that every thought, vision, or impression carries divine significance.
It’s about developing the wisdom to recognize what genuinely leads toward greater truth, love, integrity, and inner alignment.
Be open.
But remain discerning.
Be curious.
But remain humble.
Be willing to explore.
But let your life—not merely your experiences—become the evidence of what you’ve truly learned.
Because in the end, the most trustworthy guidance is rarely measured by how dramatic it felt in the moment.
It’s measured by the person it quietly helped you become.
And perhaps that’s been the purpose of genuine spiritual guidance all along.
Not to impress us.
But to transform us.
If these ideas resonate with you, I explore them more deeply in The Other 95%, The Heart Compass, the Divine Algorithm Framework, and through the work of The Way Within Church. My hope is to help people develop a spirituality that is both deeply open and deeply discerning—one that welcomes profound inner experiences while remaining grounded in humility, wisdom, integrity, and a life that consistently bears good fruit.
