How to Recognize a False Teacher: Healthy vs. Controlling Spirituality

Overview

One of the greatest questions you can ask isn’t,

“Who is the right teacher?”

It’s,

“How do I know when someone is leading me away from truth?”

Throughout history, every generation has had sincere teachers.

Every generation has also had manipulative ones.

Some wore expensive suits.

Some wore simple robes.

Some stood behind pulpits.

Others built massive online followings.

The appearance changes.

The warning signs rarely do.

The good news is that you don’t have to become cynical.

You simply need to develop discernment.

A True Teacher Wants You to Think

One of the first things I look for is whether a teacher encourages questions.

Truth isn’t threatened by honest inquiry.

Healthy teachers welcome thoughtful conversation.

They understand that real faith becomes stronger when people ask sincere questions.

Controlling teachers often do the opposite.

Questions become rebellion.

Doubt becomes weakness.

Curiosity becomes something to fear.

When someone discourages you from thinking for yourself, they’re often asking you to trust them more than the truth.

That should concern you.

Healthy Teachers Point Beyond Themselves

Every genuine teacher I’ve respected has understood one simple principle.

The goal isn’t to create followers.

It’s to help people grow.

A healthy teacher celebrates when you become more discerning, more confident, and less dependent on them.

A controlling teacher often needs you to stay dependent.

They become the gatekeeper.

The interpreter.

The only one who supposedly has the answers.

The more dependent you become, the more power they gain.

That isn’t spiritual maturity.

It’s control.

Fear Is a Powerful Tool

Fear has always been one of the easiest ways to influence people.

“If you leave, you’ll lose God.”

“If you disagree, you’re deceived.”

“If you question me, you’re questioning God.”

Those statements may create obedience.

They rarely create freedom.

One of the things I’ve noticed throughout history is that controlling systems often rely on fear to maintain loyalty.

Healthy spirituality invites people into love, responsibility, and discernment.

Fear may get quick results.

Love produces lasting transformation.

Pay Attention to the Fruit

Jesus offered one of the simplest tests.

“You will know them by their fruits.”

Notice He didn’t say,

“You’ll know them by how charismatic they are.”

Or how large their audience becomes.

Or how convincing they sound.

He pointed to fruit.

Does their teaching produce greater compassion?

Greater humility?

Greater honesty?

Greater freedom?

Or does it produce fear, pride, division, dependency, and constant conflict?

Eventually, the fruit tells the story.

Beware of Anyone Who Claims Exclusive Access to Truth

One of the biggest warning signs I see is when someone claims that they alone possess the complete truth.

History is full of people making that claim.

Healthy teachers recognize that they’re still learning.

They can confidently share what they’ve discovered while remaining humble enough to acknowledge that they don’t know everything.

Humility isn’t weakness.

It’s honesty.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much there still is to discover.

The Divine Algorithm Perspective

Within the Divine Algorithm—a framework I introduced in 2024—I believe one of the greatest gifts we’ve been given is discernment.

Not blind acceptance.

Not blind rejection.

Discernment.

That means listening carefully.

Testing ideas.

Observing outcomes.

Remaining open without becoming gullible.

A framework should help you become more aware, more compassionate, and more connected with God—not more dependent on another human being.

If someone consistently pulls your attention toward themselves instead of helping you strengthen your own relationship with God, it’s worth asking why.

Healthy Spirituality Produces Freedom

I’ve found that healthy spirituality has certain characteristics.

It invites.

It never forces.

It teaches.

It doesn’t manipulate.

It encourages responsibility instead of shame.

It creates space for growth instead of demanding perfection.

It welcomes honest questions instead of punishing them.

Most importantly, it points you toward a deeper relationship with God rather than replacing that relationship with loyalty to a personality.

Trust, But Test

I’m not suggesting you become suspicious of everyone.

There are wonderful teachers in the world.

People who genuinely want to help others.

Learn from them.

Appreciate them.

Be grateful for them.

But don’t surrender your discernment.

Even the best teachers are human.

Every idea deserves to be examined.

Every claim deserves thoughtful consideration.

The goal isn’t to find someone who does all your thinking for you.

The goal is to become someone who can recognize truth wherever it appears.

The Teacher Within

One of the reasons the words of Jesus continue to inspire me is because they consistently point people toward a living relationship with God.

“The Kingdom of God is within you.”

I’ve spent years reflecting on that statement.

To me, it means that while teachers can encourage us, challenge us, and share wisdom, none of them can replace the quiet relationship each of us is invited to cultivate with God.

Study widely.

Listen carefully.

Ask honest questions.

Remain humble.

And never allow admiration for a teacher to become more important than your pursuit of truth.

The greatest teachers don’t ask you to become more like them.

They help you become more fully yourself.

When that happens, spirituality stops being about control…

…and becomes what I believe it was always meant to be:

A journey of truth, freedom, discernment, and an ever-deepening relationship with the One within you.
