“The Truth Will Set You Free… But First It’s Going to Piss You Off.”

Overview

One of my favorite modern sayings is this:

“The truth will set you free… but first it’s going to piss you off.”

It’s humorous.

It’s blunt.

And in my experience, there’s a great deal of wisdom hidden inside it.

Jesus said,

“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

What He didn’t say was that truth would always feel good.

Sometimes truth is inspiring.

Sometimes it’s comforting.

Sometimes it’s exactly what we’ve been hoping to hear.

But many times…

Truth is deeply uncomfortable.

Truth Interrupts the Story We’ve Been Telling Ourselves

Most of us don’t resist truth because we hate truth.

We resist it because we’ve built an identity around something that isn’t true.

Maybe we’ve convinced ourselves we’re a victim when we’ve also contributed to the problem.

Maybe we’ve blamed someone else for years while refusing to look at our own choices.

Maybe we’ve spent decades chasing success, only to discover we were climbing the wrong mountain.

Truth doesn’t simply give us new information.

It asks us to let go of an old version of ourselves.

That’s rarely easy.

Ego Doesn’t Like Being Corrected

Our ego loves certainty.

It wants to be right.

It wants to protect the image we’ve created of ourselves.

So when truth arrives, the first response is often resistance.

“That can’t be right.”

“They’re wrong.”

“They don’t understand me.”

“That’s not what happened.”

Sometimes those reactions are justified.

Sometimes they aren’t.

The challenge is having enough humility to pause before defending ourselves.

The First Emotion Isn’t Always the Final One

I’ve learned not to trust my first emotional reaction to difficult truths.

Sometimes my first response is frustration.

Sometimes it’s denial.

Sometimes it’s even anger.

But if I stay curious instead of defensive, something interesting happens.

The emotion begins to settle.

And I can finally ask,

“Is there something here I need to see?”

That question has changed my life more than once.

The Divine Algorithm and Radical Honesty

One of the foundations of The Divine Algorithm is simple.

You cannot become free from what you’re unwilling to face.

Awareness always comes before transformation.

If we’re constantly defending our illusions, we’ll never experience the freedom that truth offers.

Truth isn’t trying to shame us.

It’s trying to liberate us.

The discomfort isn’t the destination.

It’s the doorway.

Growth Usually Feels Like Loss

Every season of growth asks us to release something.

An old belief.

A limiting story.

A false identity.

A destructive habit.

A relationship that no longer reflects who we’re becoming.

Whenever we let go of something familiar, even if it was unhealthy, part of us grieves.

That’s why growth often feels painful before it feels peaceful.

Don’t Run From the Mirror

The people who grow the most aren’t the people who never make mistakes.

They’re the people who are willing to look honestly in the mirror.

To admit when they’re wrong.

To change their minds.

To apologize.

To begin again.

That takes courage.

But it also creates freedom.

Because there’s nothing more exhausting than defending a version of yourself you know isn’t real.

Freedom Comes After the Friction

The irony is that the truths we resisted the most often become the truths we’re most grateful we discovered.

Looking back, many of the moments that frustrated me eventually became turning points.

Not because they were pleasant.

Because they were honest.

They dismantled something false so something true could take its place.

Welcome the Truth

The next time the truth challenges you…

Don’t rush to reject it.

Sit with it.

Question it.

Examine it.

If it’s false, it won’t stand.

If it’s true, it may change your life.

Yes, the truth may frustrate you.

It may humble you.

It may completely rearrange the way you see yourself and the world.

But don’t mistake temporary discomfort for permanent harm.

The deepest freedom rarely comes from hearing what we want to hear.

It comes from having the courage to embrace what is true.

Because the truth doesn’t arrive to destroy you.

It arrives to set you free.
