What Are My Chakras? A Different Way of Understanding the Body’s Energy and Awareness
Overview
Few ideas in spirituality have become as widely discussed—and as widely misunderstood—as the chakras.
Some people dismiss them entirely.
Others believe they hold the key to physical healing, emotional balance, and spiritual awakening.
Walk into almost any yoga studio or wellness center, and you’ll hear people talking about blocked chakras, balancing chakras, or raising energy through the body’s seven energy centers.
But what are chakras, really?
And why have so many cultures become fascinated by them?
After years of studying neuroscience, consciousness, human behavior, and spiritual traditions, I’ve come to view the chakras through a slightly different lens.
Not as mysterious spinning wheels floating somewhere outside the body…
But as a symbolic way of understanding how consciousness, the body, and our inner life work together.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disk.”
In the spiritual traditions of India, chakras are commonly described as centers through which life energy flows.
Different traditions describe them differently, but the most widely known model includes seven primary chakras extending from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
For thousands of years, these centers have been associated with different aspects of human experience—survival, creativity, personal strength, love, communication, intuition, and spiritual awareness.
These ideas belong to long-standing spiritual traditions. They are not part of established human anatomy in the way organs, nerves, or blood vessels are.
My Perspective
Over time, I’ve come to see the chakra system as something more practical.
I view the chakras as a symbolic framework that closely parallels major regions of the body where the nervous system, endocrine glands, emotions, and awareness intersect.
In my view, the glands located throughout the body function as remarkable biological communication centers.
They release hormones that influence nearly every aspect of human life.
They interact continuously with the brain, nervous system, immune system, and the body’s electrical activity.
Because every cell in the body communicates through electrical and chemical signals, I believe these gland-rich regions can also serve as meaningful reference points for understanding how our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives interact.
This is my interpretation rather than an established scientific model.
The Body Is an Electrical System
One fact often overlooked is that your body is constantly generating electrical activity.
Your brain communicates through electrical impulses.
Your heart produces measurable electrical and magnetic fields.
Your nerves transmit signals throughout your body.
Every heartbeat…
Every thought…
Every movement…
Depends upon extraordinary electrical communication.
Science measures these processes every day through technologies such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and electroencephalograms (EEGs).
To me, this reminds us that we are far more dynamic than we often imagine.
Seven Centers of Human Experience
Whether someone interprets chakras literally or symbolically, the traditional seven-center model offers an interesting way to reflect on different dimensions of life.
Root Chakra – Often associated with security, stability, and survival.
Sacral Chakra – Commonly connected with creativity, relationships, and emotional expression.
Solar Plexus Chakra – Frequently linked to confidence, responsibility, and personal growth.
Heart Chakra – Associated with compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, and love.
Throat Chakra – Connected with honest communication and authentic self-expression.
Third Eye Chakra – Traditionally associated with insight, discernment, imagination, and intuition.
Crown Chakra – Often understood as representing spiritual awareness, wisdom, and one’s relationship with the divine.
Whether you understand these as energetic realities, symbolic teaching tools, or psychological metaphors, they invite us to examine every area of our lives.
The Divine Algorithm
One of the reasons I find the chakra model meaningful is because of how it fits into what I call The Divine Algorithm.
To me, life is not divided into separate compartments.
Mind.
Body.
Spirit.
Relationships.
Choices.
Health.
Purpose.
They are constantly influencing one another.
When we become more aware of our inner life, we often make wiser decisions.
When we care for our bodies, our minds frequently benefit.
When we cultivate gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion, our relationships often improve.
Everything is connected.
The Divine Algorithm reminds me that transformation is rarely isolated.
Growth in one area often creates growth in many others.
Are Your Chakras “Blocked”?
People often ask whether their chakras are blocked.
I prefer asking a different question.
Where in my life am I resisting growth?
Am I living in fear?
Am I withholding forgiveness?
Am I avoiding difficult conversations?
Am I ignoring my conscience?
Am I neglecting my health?
Am I living without purpose?
Whether someone describes these challenges as blocked energy, emotional patterns, or psychological habits, the invitation is the same.
Become aware.
Take responsibility.
Grow.
How Do We Bring Ourselves Into Balance?
For me, balancing the chakras is not about chasing mystical experiences.
It’s about becoming a more integrated human being.
Prayer.
Meditation.
Breathwork.
Gratitude.
Exercise.
Nutritious food.
Healthy relationships.
Time in nature.
Honest self-reflection.
Forgiveness.
Service to others.
These practices influence every part of who we are.
Whether you describe the result as greater well-being, emotional balance, spiritual growth, or harmony, the transformation begins with intentional living.
Beyond the Labels
Sometimes we become so focused on the language that we miss the lesson.
Some people say “chakras.”
Others say “the nervous system.”
Others speak of the endocrine system.
Others describe emotional health or spiritual maturity.
The words matter less than the reality they point toward.
Human beings flourish when mind, body, and spirit are moving in the same direction.
Final Thoughts
What are your chakras?
Traditionally, they are described as centers through which life energy flows.
In my own understanding, they also provide a meaningful way of thinking about the body’s major communication centers and the relationship between consciousness, our biology, and spiritual growth.
While science has not established chakras as anatomical structures or confirmed that they function as measurable energy centers, the framework has helped many people reflect on areas of life that deserve attention.
Ultimately, I don’t believe transformation comes from memorizing the names of seven chakras.
It comes from becoming more aware.
More honest.
More compassionate.
More grounded.
More aligned with God.
Because when every part of your life begins moving in harmony, something remarkable happens.
You don’t simply feel more balanced.
You become more fully the person you were created to be.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are chakras?
In traditional Indian spiritual systems, chakras are described as energy centers associated with different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual life.
Are chakras scientifically proven?
Chakras are not recognized as anatomical structures in modern medicine, and their existence as measurable energy centers has not been established by scientific evidence. They are generally understood within spiritual and philosophical traditions.
Are chakras connected to endocrine glands?
Some modern spiritual teachers draw parallels between the traditional chakra locations and major endocrine glands. These associations are interpretive and are not part of established medical anatomy or physiology.
How can I support overall balance?
Practices such as prayer, meditation, exercise, healthy nutrition, adequate sleep, meaningful relationships, gratitude, self-reflection, and stress management can all contribute to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
