The Spiritual Risks of Over-Reliance on External Algorithms—And Why Your Inner Guidance Still Matters

Overview

Every day, algorithms quietly influence our lives.

They decide what appears in our social media feeds.

They recommend the next video we watch.

They suggest the books we read.

The music we hear.

The products we buy.

The news we consume.

Even the people we meet online.

Most of us rarely think about them.

Yet they’re constantly shaping what captures our attention.

Algorithms themselves aren’t the problem.

They’re incredibly useful.

They help us navigate overwhelming amounts of information.

They save time.

They personalize experiences.

They make powerful technology more accessible.

The real danger begins when we slowly stop making our own decisions.

When external algorithms begin replacing inner discernment.

This realization became one of the reasons I introduced The Divine Algorithm in 2024. While digital algorithms are designed to predict behavior, recommend content, and optimize engagement, I use the term Divine Algorithm to describe something entirely different—a framework for living from inner wisdom, conscious awareness, and alignment rather than unconscious programming or external influence.

Every Algorithm Optimizes for Something

One of the first questions worth asking about any system is:

What is it optimizing for?

A streaming platform may optimize for watch time.

A social media platform may optimize for engagement.

A search engine may optimize for relevance.

A business may optimize for profit.

None of those goals are automatically wrong.

But none of them necessarily optimize for your peace.

Your purpose.

Your integrity.

Or your spiritual growth.

That’s why discernment matters.

Convenience and wisdom are not always the same thing.

External Programming Has Always Existed

Long before smartphones existed, people were shaped by external influences.

Family expectations.

Cultural traditions.

Political movements.

Advertising.

Schools.

Religious institutions.

Communities.

None of us grow up without programming.

The question has never been whether we’re influenced.

The question is whether we become aware of those influences.

Awareness creates choice.

Without awareness, programming quietly becomes identity.

Technology Didn’t Invent the Problem

It’s easy to blame artificial intelligence or social media.

The truth is, human beings have always looked outside themselves for certainty.

We’ve looked to crowds.

Leaders.

Experts.

Celebrities.

Institutions.

Technology simply accelerated a pattern that already existed.

The deeper issue isn’t digital.

It’s human.

We often feel safer when someone else tells us what to believe.

Thinking for ourselves requires humility, responsibility, and courage.

The Divine Algorithm Invites Conscious Living

One of the central ideas behind the Divine Algorithm is that while we should remain open to learning from the world around us, we should never stop examining what we’re allowing to shape us.

Every conversation.

Every article.

Every book.

Every sermon.

Every podcast.

Every AI response.

Every algorithm.

Should become an invitation to think more deeply—not less.

Discernment grows when curiosity and awareness work together.

Beware of Outsourcing Your Identity

One of the greatest spiritual risks isn’t simply believing incorrect information.

It’s forgetting who you are beneath everyone else’s expectations.

When your identity depends entirely on likes…

Followers…

Approval…

Status…

Recognition…

Or constant external validation…

You’ve quietly handed your inner compass to something outside yourself.

No algorithm should determine your worth.

No platform should define your identity.

No trend should decide your purpose.

Those are deeply personal discoveries.

Curate What Shapes You

Every day you’re being formed by something.

The question is whether you’ve chosen it intentionally.

Ask yourself:

What conversations am I having?

What ideas am I repeatedly consuming?

Who influences my thinking?

What emotions consistently follow my digital habits?

Do I feel more peaceful after using this technology?

Or more anxious?

More grateful?

Or more distracted?

These questions aren’t about guilt.

They’re about awareness.

And awareness creates freedom.

Silence Is Becoming a Radical Practice

Perhaps one of the greatest losses of the digital age is silence.

There is always another notification.

Another message.

Another opinion.

Another headline.

Another video.

Another distraction.

Silence has become rare.

Yet silence is often where clarity begins.

It’s difficult to recognize your own inner voice if someone else’s voice is constantly filling every empty moment.

Protecting silence isn’t withdrawing from life.

It’s making room to actually hear it.

Learn From Everything. Worship Nothing.

I’ve adopted a simple principle.

Learn from everyone.

Become dependent on no one.

Science has much to teach us.

Ancient wisdom has much to teach us.

Books.

Technology.

Mentors.

Communities.

Even artificial intelligence.

Every one of them offers valuable perspectives.

None of them should replace your own responsibility to think, observe, experience, and discern.

Healthy learning expands freedom.

Unhealthy dependence quietly reduces it.

The Future Will Reward Discernment

Artificial intelligence will continue improving.

Algorithms will become increasingly sophisticated.

Personalization will become more precise.

Information will become more abundant.

In that future, one skill may become more valuable than any other.

Discernment.

The ability to pause.

To question.

To compare perspectives.

To remain humble.

To think clearly.

To recognize what genuinely aligns with your deepest values.

Technology may become smarter.

Your responsibility to remain conscious becomes even greater.

Final Thoughts

I don’t believe external algorithms are the greatest threat to humanity.

I believe unconscious living is.

Technology doesn’t remove our freedom.

It simply gives us more opportunities to exercise it—or surrender it.

The Divine Algorithm isn’t about rejecting the modern world.

It’s about living within it without allowing it to define you.

Use technology.

Learn constantly.

Explore widely.

Remain curious.

But never stop returning to the quiet place where your deepest decisions are made.

Because while digital algorithms may become extraordinarily intelligent…

Only you can decide who you become.

And that decision has never belonged to a machine.

If these ideas resonate with you, I explore them more deeply in The Other 95%, The Heart Compass, and the Divine Algorithm Framework. My hope is to help people navigate an increasingly technological world without losing the timeless qualities that no algorithm can replace: wisdom, integrity, presence, compassion, discernment, and the quiet guidance that grows stronger the more faithfully we learn to trust it.
